The Impact Imperative – A Better Future for Everyone
The word impact has multiple interpretations. Aartha uses the definition below, as defined by thousands of practitioners, to serve our clients,
“Impact is a change in an outcome caused by an organization. An impact can be positive or negative, intended or unintended.”
Informally, the word “impact” describes a better world. Everyone cares for a better world. In 2015, 193 countries adopted the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The seventeen goals collectively aim for a better future for everyone. Consumers care for a better world. They consider the environmental and social costs of their consumption decisions. Investors look at indicators of employee composition and climate impact before investing. There is an increasing focus on meaningful ESG disclosures and a valid outcry about greenwashing. Employees prefer to work for organizations with purpose and even make decisions based on how their organization treats others.
An Urgency for The Right Outcomes
Because the stakes are massive, the outcomes matter. Therefore, we are having a conversation about measuring progress.
Every Dollar Counts
The SDGs are woefully underfunded. All organizations have resource constraints. Therefore, every investment dollar counts. Stakeholders expect these investments to work in the private, public, non-profit, and government sectors.
Not Knowing is Frustrating
A big challenge is that we often do not know if our programs and investments are effective or if they are making the difference they need to. High-performing, adaptive leaders find it frustrating to be in this position.
Impact Measurement and Management Have a Role to Play
Impact measurement and management (see this excellent definition by GIIN) keeps track.
